California Board Company 8-foot Surfboard Review

When you’re ready to hit the real waves off the coast of Vancouver Island, consider taking the California Board Company 8-foot surfboard with you. This gorgeous, all-modern surfboard has a vintage look that is guaranteed to turn heads. Although it’s not for novices, if you know what you’re doing then you’ll have no problem staying upright.

Also, there’s the appeal of hitting the water on a wooden California-made board. Where most of the other surfers around you will be packing fiberglass rentals, you’ll be styling on one hell of a shredder. Of course, you won’t get the kind of waves off of Long Beach that you would find in California, but this board can handle it. Northwest Pacific swells are what this board seems designed to do!

What Sets the California Board Company 8-foot Surfboard Apart?

One look at this wooden beauty and you can see that it’s a work of art. The California Board Company 8-foot surfboard has three molded-in wooden stringers. These are coated in a waterproof resin to keep the wood from soaking. Also, it has a high-density waterproof EPS core, and a slick heat-treated polyethylene bottom. This ensures that you glide over the water while admiring the wooden board under your feet. A tri-fin arrangement is held in place with nylon screws. Finally, a surf leash and neoprene padded ankle strap round out the board.

The California Board Company is a brand in Keeper Sport’s large inventory. This includes Scott Burke, Chill Pool, Swish, and others. It all began in 2008 when four buddies got together and started a surfboard company. Every board is designed and tested by an actual surfer. This helped the company grow to the point where they were the fifth most popular board outfit in California!

California Board Company 8-foot surfboard specifications

If the name didn’t give it away already, this board is an eight-foot surfboard. And, as we mentioned earlier, it looks freakin’ gorgeous. We have never seen another board like it around Tofino and Ucluelet.

  • Length: 8 feet
  • Weight: 11 pounds
  • Max weight: 230 pounds

Pricing and warranty

Because you’re getting a custom-designed board, built with real wood, it’s a little pricier than some other boards. Like we said, this isn’t a beginner’s board. Experienced surfers know that a good board costs a bit more. That being said, the California Board Company 8-foot surfboard costs between $285 and $330. It comes with a 30-day limited warranty.

Customer Reviews

Customers on Amazon loved this board. They rated it 3.7 out of 5 stars. Which is just above average for a surfboard on Amazon. Most customers said that they loved the soft wooden top, and everyone praised the stability when on the water. This thing really does glide over the surface! A common complaint we found was that people found the board a little too light, which means heavier and larger riders will have difficulty with larger waves.

How We Reviewed

In order to help you make an informed purchasing decision, we went above and beyond in digging up information for this review. It’s November and the beaches in Canada are losing their appeal, so have some extra time on our hands anyways. The first place we stopped was the California Board Company website. Here we learned about Keeper Sports and what they had to say about their own surfboard. Then, we checked out Amazon customer reviews. We love customer reviews because they give us a great idea of how a board performs in the real world.

Finally, we compared the California Board Company 8-foot surfboard to several competitors, to see how it stacks up. Once all this was done, we were able to make a recommendation for you.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Because of our in-depth study of the California Board Company 8-foot surfboard, we realized that there were many great things about this board. But, there were also a few bad things.

  • Beautiful to look at
  • Innovative design
  • Slick bottom practically sits on top of the water
  • Stable platform

  • Expensive
  • Weak warranty
  • Too light for some people

How It Stacks Up To Other Surfboards

Finally, we were able to compare the California Board Company 8-foot surfboard to a few other surfboards. Can it perform as well as a Liquid Shredder, despite its gorgeous looks?

Liquid Shredder FSE 6-foot surfboard

First up in our comparison is the FSE 6-foot surfboard from Liquid Shredder. This company began in 1991 when Scott McClain wanted to build some surfboards for his kids. He did such a good job that he went into business, founding Liquid Shredder in Peru. This is where legend has it that surfing began, and Scott wanted to be close to the roots. Also, it’s a lot cheaper to run a business there.

The FSE 6-foot surfboard features a soft foamie deck and a superfast, slick bottom. It’s supported by two wooden stringers. The entire board is only six-feet long, so you can use it in the ocean or even to paddleboard on rivers. It costs between $200 and $280 and comes with a 90-day warranty.

Customers on Amazon gave it 3.6 out of 5 stars. Most of them said it was a great beginner’s board, and one surfer said it was a lot better on the ocean than on the Great Lakes. One person complained that it is easily damaged.

SBBC 7-foot soft top surfboard

Next we have the SBBC seven-foot soft top surfboard. The South Bay Board Company hails from the South Bay area of Los Angeles. They have a unique approach to sales. Instead of building expensive distribution networks and retail partnerships, they sell direct. You can find their products on Amazon, eBay, and of course, their own website.

The seven-foot soft top surfboard is long enough for both men and women to ride, and at 22-inches wide, it’s large enough to remain stable in any swell. It has a soft top and a high-density EPS foam core. Everything gets held together by a fiberglass stringer. With a rounded thruster nose and double fins, expect to gain a lot of speed on this baby. You can buy it for between $365 and $485.

We weren’t able to find Amazon customer reviews for this particular board.

Our Recommendation

Finally, we get to the part where we tell you if the California Board Company 8-foot surfboard is worth your money or not. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Everything depends on your size and weight. That’s because the board itself is so light that heavier surfers will find themselves struggling to keep the nose pointed in one direction. That being said, women, kids, and lighter men will love riding this deck. And, you’ll be turning heads as you do so! For this reason, we wholeheartedly recommend buying this beautiful vintage surfboard.
